๐บ Surinamese Culture & Food
Suriname is one of the most diverse countries in the world. Its people trace their roots to Indigenous nations, Africa (including the Maroons, who escaped slavery and built independent communities in the forest), India, Java, China and Europe. In Paramaribo, the Neveh Shalom synagogue stands next to the Keizerstraat mosque. Holidays from every tradition are celebrated, from Phagwa (Holi) and Eid to Keti Koti, which marks the end of slavery on 1 July 1863. Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975.
Surinamese food mirrors this mix. Try roti with curried chicken, Javanese bami, nasi and saoto soup, Creole pom (a baked dish of grated tayer root and chicken) and moksi alesi (mixed rice). Snack on bara, wash it down with Parbo beer, and look for tropical fruits at the Central Market.
