Distance Calculator

1. Distance Between Two Countries & Travel Time

Choose two countries. We measure the distance between two countries as the straight-line (great-circle) distance between their main international airports, then estimate travel by air, road, bike and on foot.

Distance between two countries shown as great-circle flight routes on a world map, from New York to London and Tokyo, London to Dubai and Lagos, and Dubai to Singapore and Sydney
The distance between two countries is measured along the great circle, the shortest path over the globe. That is why New York to Tokyo curves north over Alaska.

How it works

How We Calculate the Distance Between Two Countries

1

Main airport

Each country is represented by its main international airport, so every distance is measured between two real, fixed points.

2

Great-circle distance

We use the haversine formula to find the shortest path over the Earth’s surface, the true distance between two countries’ airports and the distance a plane would fly.

3

Flight time

Flight time assumes an average speed of about 800 km/h plus 30 minutes for take-off and landing.

4

Road estimates

Roads rarely run straight, so driving, cycling and walking add a typical detour factor. Where no road link exists, we tell you.

1 kilometre = 0.621 miles, and 1 mile = 1.609 kilometres. To convert km to miles, multiply by 0.621. To convert miles to km, multiply by 1.609. The same rule works for any distance between two countries on this page (the mile is defined as exactly 1.609344 km by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology).
FAQ

Distance Calculator: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the distance between two countries?

Choose a country in each dropdown of calculator 1 and click Calculate. You will see the flight distance in kilometres and miles, plus estimated flight, driving, cycling and walking times.

Is the distance measured from the capital city?

Distances are measured between each country’s main international airport, which is usually in or near the capital or largest city. The exact airport is shown in each dropdown.

What is great-circle distance?

It is the shortest distance between two points on the surface of a sphere, sometimes called the distance “as the crow flies” (see great-circle distance). Planes follow routes close to it, so it is also known as flight distance.

Why is the driving distance longer than the flight distance?

Roads follow valleys, coastlines and borders, so they are almost always longer than a straight line. Our road estimate adds about 22% to the straight-line distance, which is typical for long journeys.

Can I find the distance between two cities?

Yes, for the main city of each country. Each country is measured from its main international airport, which serves the capital or largest city: for example, London, New York, Paris or Tokyo. For other cities, pick the country they are in for a close estimate, or see the popular routes table above.

How far is New York from London?

About 5,540 km (3,442 miles) between JFK and Heathrow airports in a straight line. A non-stop flight takes roughly 7 to 7½ hours.

How many kilometres are in a mile?

One mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres, and one kilometre is about 0.621 miles. A nautical mile, used in aviation and shipping, is 1.852 km.

What is the longest possible distance between two places on Earth?

About 20,000 km (12,430 miles), half of the Earth’s circumference. Places that far apart are on exact opposite sides of the planet and are called antipodes.

How accurate are the travel times?

They are planning estimates. Real flight times depend on wind, routing and aircraft, and road times depend on traffic, border crossings and rest stops.
