📍 Where Is Mongolia?

Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia, wedged between Russia to the north and China to the south. The north has forests, lakes and the Khangai mountains; the south is the Gobi Desert; and the far west rises to the glaciers of the Altai Mountains. Most of the country is open grassland, the steppe, with few paved roads.

Ulaanbaatar is about 9–10 hours from Europe with one connection, and about 2.5 hours by air from Beijing or Seoul. The Trans-Mongolian Railway links it with Beijing and Russia. Check distances with our distance calculator.

📅 Best Time to Visit Mongolia

The best time to visit Mongolia is June to September, when days are warm (about 20–28°C), the steppe is green and ger camps are open. The Naadam Festival (11–15 July) brings wrestling, horse racing and archery, and flights and camps sell out months ahead. In early October the Golden Eagle Festival takes place in Bayan-Ölgii. Winters (November–March) are among the coldest in the world, often below −25°C, though Ulaanbaatar still welcomes visitors for Tsagaan Sar, the Lunar New Year.

☀️ Summer (Jun–Aug)

Ger camps, horse trekking, the Gobi and Naadam.

🍂 Autumn (Sep–Oct)

Golden larch forests and the Golden Eagle Festival.

❄️ Winter (Nov–Mar)

Extreme cold, frozen lakes and Tsagaan Sar.

🌱 Spring (Apr–May)

Windy and dusty; quiet and cheaper.

🐎 Mongolian Culture & Food

About a quarter of Mongolians still live as nomadic herders, moving with their horses, sheep, goats, yaks and camels between summer and winter pastures. The legacy of Genghis Khan is everywhere, Tibetan Buddhism has revived since 1990, and traditional arts include khöömii throat singing, long song and the horse-head fiddle, morin khuur.

Food is hearty and built on meat and dairy: buuz (steamed dumplings), khuushuur (fried meat pastries), tsuivan (noodles with mutton) and khorkhog, mutton cooked with hot stones. Guests are offered suutei tsai, salty milk tea, and in summer airag, fermented mare's milk.
