⛔ Do not travel (October 2026): since 2 March 2026 Lebanon has been drawn into the regional war, with Israeli airstrikes across the south, the Bekaa Valley and Beirut's southern suburbs, and ground fighting in the south. More than a million people have been displaced. Ceasefires in April and June did not hold for long. The US rates Lebanon Level 4: Do Not Travel (updated 23 October 2026), citing armed conflict, terrorism, kidnapping and landmines, and other Western governments also advise against travel. Beirut airport is open, but flights are often cancelled at short notice and European regulators warn airlines about Lebanese airspace. If you are in Lebanon, follow your embassy's advice.

Two mountain ranges run north to south: Mount Lebanon above the coast and the Anti-Lebanon along the Syrian border, with the fertile Bekaa Valley between them. The country is only about 225 km long, so in normal times Byblos, the cedars and Baalbek are all day trips from Beirut.

Beirut is about 5 hours by air from London and 2 hours from Istanbul or Cairo. Check distances with our distance calculator.

📅 Best Time to Visit Lebanon

🏨 Where to Stay in Lebanon

While the US rates Lebanon Level 4: Do Not Travel, we are not recommending individual hotels. In normal times, most visitors stay in Beirut (Hamra, Achrafieh and the downtown seafront) and take day trips, or in boutique guesthouses in Byblos, Batroun and the mountain villages.

🔎 Why there are no hotel picks in this travel guide to Lebanon: we do not recommend individual hotels while major governments advise against all travel. We will add them if the advice changes.

🍽️ Lebanese Culture & Food

Lebanon is home to 18 officially recognised religious communities, and daily life mixes Arabic, French and English, often in the same sentence. The country gave the world the poet Khalil Gibran and the singer Fairuz, and the dabke line dance appears at every wedding.

Lebanese food is famous across the world. A meal starts with mezze: hummus, moutabal, tabbouleh, fattoush and kibbeh, then grilled meats such as shish taouk and kafta. Breakfast is man'oushe, flatbread with za'atar or cheese, and dessert is knafeh with orange-blossom syrup. Lebanon also has a long wine tradition in the Bekaa Valley and the aniseed spirit arak.
