The best time to visit Latvia is May to September, with long days, warm weather and outdoor cafés. The biggest party of the year is Jāņi (Midsummer) on 23–24 June, when Latvians head to the countryside for bonfires, flower crowns and singing. Autumn brings golden colours in the Gauja Valley, while winter is cold and snowy, with Christmas markets in Riga — which claims the first decorated Christmas tree in 1510.

Visa-free visits: Latvia is in the Schengen Area. Citizens of the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and many other countries can visit without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries together. EU and EEA citizens can travel with a national ID card.
🛂 EES is now in force: since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully running. On your first Schengen entry, non-EU visitors register fingerprints and a photo at the border instead of getting passport stamps. ETIAS, an online travel authorisation for visa-free visitors, is expected from late 2026 but may slip to 2027, and it is not required yet.

🌺 Latvian Culture & Food
Latvians have one of the world's richest folk song traditions: more than a million short folk verses called dainas have been collected. The Song and Dance Celebration, held about every five years, brings tens of thousands of singers together and is recognised by UNESCO. Nature and the old pagan calendar shape the year, above all at Jāņi, the midsummer festival. Latvia regained independence in 1991 after the peaceful "Baltic Way" human chain of 1989.
Food is hearty and seasonal. Try grey peas with bacon, dark rye bread, smoked fish, pīrāgi (bacon-filled buns), cold pink beetroot soup in summer and Jāņu siers caraway cheese at Midsummer. Wash it down with local beer or Riga Black Balsam. Say "Labdien" for hello and "Paldies" for thank you.
