The best time to visit Lithuania is May to September, with warm days around 20–25 °C, long evenings and the beach season on the coast in July and August. Joninės (Midsummer) on 23–24 June is celebrated with bonfires and flower wreaths. Autumn is colourful and quiet, while winter is cold and snowy, with Christmas markets in Vilnius and Kaunas and the Kaziukas Fair in early March.

Visa-free visits: Lithuania is in the Schengen Area. Citizens of the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and many other countries can visit without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries together. EU and EEA citizens can travel with a national ID card.
🛂 EES is now in force: since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully running. On your first Schengen entry, non-EU visitors register fingerprints and a photo at the border instead of getting passport stamps. ETIAS, an online travel authorisation for visa-free visitors, is expected from late 2026 but may slip to 2027, and it is not required yet.

🌺 Lithuanian Culture & Food
In the 14th–16th centuries, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the largest state in Europe, stretching to the Black Sea. Lithuania was also the last country in Europe to convert to Christianity, and its pagan traditions still colour festivals such as Midsummer. On 11 March 1990, it became the first Soviet republic to declare independence. Lithuanians are passionate about basketball, and the art of cross-crafting is recognised by UNESCO.
Lithuanian food is hearty and potato-based. Try cepelinai (potato dumplings filled with meat and topped with sour cream and bacon), bright pink šaltibarščiai (cold beetroot soup), kibinai pastries, dark rye bread, smoked eel on the coast and šakotis, a tree-shaped spit cake.
