๐ Where Is Nigeria?
Nigeria is in West Africa, on the Gulf of Guinea. It borders Benin to the west, Niger to the north, Chad to the north-east across Lake Chad, and Cameroon to the east. The Niger and Benue rivers meet at Lokoja in the centre of the country.
The south is tropical and coastal, with mangroves and lagoons around Lagos and the Niger Delta; the centre has rocky hills and savannah; and the north is drier Sahel country. Flights take about 6.5 hours from London to Lagos, around 8 hours from Dubai and about 12 hours from New York. Check the distance from your city with our distance calculator, or explore more in our Africa guides.
๐ Best Time to Visit Nigeria
The dry season from November to March is the best time to visit Nigeria, with sunshine, less humidity and easier travel. From December to February the dusty Harmattan wind can bring hazy skies and cooler mornings. December is also the famous "Detty December" party season in Lagos, when flights and hotels are at their busiest. The rainy season (AprilโOctober) brings heavy downpours and street flooding in coastal cities, but lush green landscapes.
Best for sightseeing, beaches and nature. Book December in Lagos well ahead.
Green scenery and waterfalls; expect flooding and traffic delays in cities.
Osun-Osogbo Festival (August), Durbar festivals at Eid in the north, and Calabar Carnival (December).
Marks independence from Britain in 1960 with parades and celebrations.

๐ ECOWAS citizens (for example from Ghana, Senegal or Cรดte d'Ivoire) can enter visa-free.
- Yellow fever certificate (mandatory)Carry your original yellow card; you can be refused entry without it.

๐บ Nigerian Culture & Food
Nigeria is home to more than 250 ethnic groups, including the Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo, and over 500 languages. Its creative energy reaches the whole world through Afrobeats, Nollywood (one of the largest film industries on Earth), fashion and literature. Its history runs deep, from the ancient Nok terracottas to the Benin Bronzes, and the country has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove and the Sukur Cultural Landscape.
Nigerian food is bold and spicy. Try jollof rice, smoky suya (spiced grilled meat), egusi soup with pounded yam, pepper soup, akara (bean fritters), moi moi, sweet puff-puff and a cold Chapman. A cheerful "How far?" (How are you?) in Pidgin, or a respectful greeting to elders, always earns a smile.
