South Korea covers the southern part of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. Its only land border is the heavily guarded Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) with North Korea. China lies across the Yellow Sea to the west and Japan across the Korea Strait and the East Sea. The country is mountainous, with more than 3,000 islands, the largest being Jeju.

Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, with the monsoon (jangma) in July. Winter (December–February) is cold and dry, often below −10 °C in Seoul, but good for skiing and cheaper hotels. Avoid the Chuseok and Lunar New Year holidays if you want empty trains.

Visa-free, and K-ETA-exempt in 2026: citizens of the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, most EU countries and others can visit South Korea without a visa (90 days for most; 6 months for Canadians). Nationals of 67 countries and territories are exempt from the K-ETA until 31 December 2026. You can still apply for an optional K-ETA (KRW 10,000), which lets you skip the e-Arrival Card. Other nationalities need a K-ETA or a visa.
