The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean, on the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti to the west. Cuba and Jamaica lie to the west and Puerto Rico to the east, across the Mona Passage. The north coast faces the Atlantic Ocean and the south coast the Caribbean Sea.

The best time to visit the Dominican Republic is December to April, the dry season, with sunny days around 28–30 °C and lower humidity. It is also the busiest and most expensive time, especially at Christmas, New Year and Easter. Humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay from mid-January to late March. The hurricane season runs from June to November, with the greatest risk from August to October, when prices are lowest.

This route mixes beaches, history and nature. Buses (guaguas and coaches such as Caribe Tours) connect towns cheaply, but a rental car or private driver is easier for the east and Samaná.
