🌺 Bahamian Culture & Food
Bahamian culture blends West African roots with British colonial history and the influence of nearby America. Junkanoo is its heart: groups ("shacks") spend all year building crepe-paper costumes for the Boxing Day and New Year's Day parades, dancing to goatskin drums, cowbells and horns. Music styles include rake-and-scrape and goombay. The country has strong conservation traditions, and the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, founded in 1958, was the world's first of its kind.
The national food is conch: try it raw in a lime-dressed conch salad, deep-fried as conch fritters or as cracked conch. Other favourites are peas and rice, Bahamian rock lobster, johnnycake, souse and guava duff with rum sauce. Drink a Kalik beer or Sky Juice.
