The internet is heavily censored, VPNs are illegal, and photographing government buildings can lead to problems. The US rates Turkmenistan Level 1: Exercise normal precautions (August 2026), but the Afghan and Iranian border areas are restricted.

🐎 Turkmen Culture & Food

Turkmen culture comes from nomadic tribes of the desert. The country is famous for hand-knotted carpets (their patterns appear on the flag), the golden Akhal-Teke horses, felt yurts and the poetry of Magtymguly. Hospitality is generous, and guests are welcomed with green tea and bread, which must never be placed upside down.

Food is simple and hearty: plov (rice with mutton and carrots), dograma (bread and meat stew), ichlekli (a meat pie baked in sand), shashlik and fresh melons, of which Turkmenistan has a national holiday.
