๐ Where Is Tonga?
Tonga is in the South Pacific Ocean, about 2,000 km north-east of New Zealand, with Fiji to the west and Samoa to the north. Its 171 islands form three main groups: Tongatapu in the south, with the capital Nuku'alofa; Ha'apai in the centre, a scatter of low coral islands; and Vava'u in the north, a maze of hilly islands and sheltered bays. The island of 'Eua lies just east of Tongatapu. In January 2022, the undersea volcano Hunga TongaโHunga Ha'apai erupted, causing a tsunami; most tourist areas have since recovered.
International flights land at Fua'amotu International Airport on Tongatapu, with flights from Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane, Nadi and Apia. Domestic flights and ferries link the island groups. Check distances with our distance calculator.

๐บ Tongan Culture & Food
Tonga is the only Pacific island nation that was never fully colonised; it was a British protected state until 1970 and remains a constitutional monarchy under King Tupou VI. Society is built on family, the church and respect for rank. Tongans are known for their choirs, the lakalaka dance (on UNESCO's intangible heritage list), and ngatu, bark cloth made from the paper mulberry tree. People often wear a ta'ovala, a woven mat tied around the waist, on formal occasions.
Traditional food is cooked in an 'umu earth oven. Try lu pulu (corned beef with coconut cream wrapped in taro leaves), 'ota 'ika (raw fish in coconut cream and lime), roast pork, yams and taro, and 'otai, a drink of watermelon, coconut and fruit. Kava is drunk at ceremonies and evening gatherings.
