π‘ Safety & Travel Tips for Your Travel guide to Mozambique
Most tourist areas in the south and centre are peaceful, but take care. In Maputo, avoid walking at night, keep valuables out of sight and use registered taxis. Police checkpoints are common on roads, so carry your passport (or a certified copy) and driving documents. Many governments advise against travel to parts of Cabo Delgado province in the far north, including areas near the Quirimbas Islands, because of insurgent violence, so check your government's advice before going north. Malaria is present across the country.
Visa-exempt travellers must register online at least 48 hours before departure.
Take advice on prevention, especially outside Maputo.
Police may ask for your passport; a certified copy is useful.
ATMs are limited outside towns; meticais, rand or dollars are useful.
Grilled prawns with piri-piri sauce are the national favourite.
"Bom dia" (good morning) and "Obrigado/Obrigada" (thank you) go a long way.
