🌺 Salvadoran Culture & Food
Salvadoran culture mixes indigenous Pipil (Nahua) and Lenca roots with Spanish colonial traditions. Catholic festivals fill the calendar, and towns such as Nahuizalco and Ataco keep crafts, markets and mural art alive. El Salvador declared independence from Spain on 15 September 1821, together with its Central American neighbours. Saint Óscar Romero, the archbishop murdered in 1980 and canonised in 2018, is a national hero.
The national dish is the pupusa, a thick corn tortilla filled with cheese, beans, chicharrón or the edible flower loroco, served with curtido (pickled cabbage) and tomato salsa. Try yuca frita, sopa de pata, fresh seafood on the coast, horchata de morro and excellent local coffee.
