๐ก Safety & Travel Tips for Your Travel guide to Lesotho
The mountains are generally safe and welcoming, but take normal precautions in Maseru: avoid walking at night, keep valuables hidden and lock car doors. The bigger risks are natural: weather changes fast at altitude, with lightning storms in summer and snow in winter, so carry warm layers all year. Roads are narrow and steep, with livestock and pedestrians, so avoid driving after dark. Fill up with fuel whenever you can, and carry cash, as ATMs are rare outside towns.

Many border posts close in the afternoon; plan to cross early.
Card machines and ATMs are rare outside Maseru and big towns.
Nights are cold all year because of the altitude.
Always ask before photographing people, especially herders.

๐บ Basotho Culture & Food
The Basotho nation was founded in the 1820s by King Moshoeshoe I, who held off attackers from his mountain stronghold at Thaba-Bosiu. Today Lesotho is a constitutional monarchy. The colourful Basotho blanket is worn as everyday clothing in the cold highlands, and the conical mokorotlo straw hat appears on the national flag. Sure-footed Basotho ponies remain the best way to reach many mountain villages. Moshoeshoe Day is celebrated on 11 March.
The staple is papa, a stiff maize porridge, served with moroho (greens such as spinach or cabbage), beans or meat stew. Try likhobe (mixed grains and beans), fresh trout from the highlands and traditional sorghum beer. Greet people with "Lumela" (hello) and thank them with "Kea leboha".
