📍 Where Is Guatemala?

Guatemala is the northernmost country of Central America. It borders Mexico to the north and west, Belize to the north-east, and Honduras and El Salvador to the south-east. It has a long Pacific coast of black volcanic sand and a short Caribbean coast around Livingston and the Río Dulce.

A chain of volcanoes runs through the southern highlands, where Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Guatemala City sit at a cool 1,500 m or so. The north is the lowland jungle of Petén, home to Tikal. Flights to Guatemala City take about 2.5 hours from Miami or Houston and about 5 hours from New York; Antigua is about an hour by road from the airport. Check the distance from your city with our distance calculator, or explore more in our North & Central America guides.

📅 Best Time to Visit Guatemala

Guatemala is called the "Land of Eternal Spring" because the highlands stay around 18–26 °C by day all year. The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit Guatemala, with clear skies for volcano hikes and views across Lake Atitlán. The rainy season from May to October usually means sunny mornings and heavy afternoon showers, green landscapes and fewer visitors; September and October are the wettest. Petén (Tikal) is hot and humid all year, so go early in the morning.

☀️ Dry season (Nov–Apr)

Best for Acatenango, Lake Atitlán, Tikal and Antigua. Book Antigua early for December and Holy Week.

⛪ Semana Santa (Mar/Apr)

Holy Week in Antigua is world-famous for processions over colourful sawdust carpets (alfombras).

🪁 Giant kites (1 November)

On All Saints' Day, Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez fly huge hand-made kites.

GT flag Independence Day (15 September)

Torch relays, marching bands and parades across the country.

💡 Safety & Travel Tips for Visiting Guatemala

Most visits to Guatemala's main tourist areas, including Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Flores, are trouble-free, but crime is a real issue in parts of Guatemala City and on some isolated roads and trails. Use registered tourist shuttles or app taxis such as Uber in the city, hike volcanoes with a licensed guide, avoid travelling at night and check your government's latest travel advice.

🚐 Use tourist shuttles

Door-to-door shuttles link Antigua, Atitlán, Lanquín and Flores; they are safer and easier than chicken buses for big journeys.

🥶 Pack for the cold

Acatenango's summit is 3,976 m and can drop below freezing at night. Rent warm gear in Antigua.

💵 Carry small quetzal notes

Boats, markets and tuk-tuks rarely have change for large notes. Cards work in hotels and bigger restaurants.

💧 Drink bottled water

Tap water is not safe to drink; most hotels offer refill stations.

📸 Ask before photos

Always ask Maya people before taking their photo, especially in markets and churches.

🗣️ Learn some Spanish

English is limited outside tourist businesses; a few Spanish phrases help everywhere.

🌺 Guatemalan Culture & Food

Guatemala's culture blends ancient Maya traditions with Spanish colonial heritage. More than 40% of Guatemalans are Maya, and many women still wear handwoven traje, with each village's huipil (blouse) showing its own colours and patterns. Alongside Antigua and Tikal, the country's third UNESCO site is the Maya city of Quiriguá, famous for its giant carved stone stelae. Holy Week in Antigua and the giant kites of All Saints' Day are two of the most striking festivals in Latin America.

Guatemalan food is built on corn, beans and chilli. The national dish, pepián, is a rich stew thickened with roasted seeds and spices. Try kak'ik, a spicy Maya turkey soup from Alta Verapaz, chuchitos (small tamales), rellenitos (plantain filled with sweet black beans) and, of course, highland coffee from Antigua and Atitlán. A friendly "¡Buenos días!" and "Muchas gracias" go a long way.
