๐ Where Is Tajikistan?
Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. It borders Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west and north, Kyrgyzstan to the north and China to the east. The capital, Dushanbe, sits in a green valley in the west, while the north around Khujand belongs to the fertile Fergana Valley.
The east of the country is the Pamir Mountains, a high plateau and range often called the "Roof of the World", crossed by the famous Pamir Highway (M41) and bordered by Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor along the Panj River. There are no direct long-haul flights from Western Europe or North America; most visitors connect through Istanbul, Dubai, Almaty or Tashkent. Check the distance from your city with our distance calculator, or explore the region in our Asia guides.

๐ก Safety & Travel Tips for Visiting Tajikistan
Tajik people are famous for their hospitality, and street crime is low. The main risks are road safety on mountain roads, altitude in the Pamirs, and the border areas described above. Avoid photographing government buildings, police and military sites, and carry your passport at checkpoints.
ATMs are rare outside Dushanbe and Khujand. Carry clean US dollars or euros to exchange.
Buy a Tcell or Megafon SIM in Dushanbe; expect no signal in remote valleys.
The Pamirs are 3,500โ4,600 m high. Ascend slowly, drink water and watch for headaches.
Cover shoulders and knees, especially in villages and mosques.
Use bottled, boiled or filtered water; carry a filter bottle for treks.
Hospitality is central; accepting a cup of green tea is polite even if you stay briefly.

๐บ Tajik Culture & Food
Tajiks are a Persian-speaking people, and their culture draws on more than a thousand years of Persian poetry, from Rudaki, regarded as the father of Persian poetry, to Rumi. Silk Road trade, Soviet history and mountain traditions all leave their mark. Look out for chakan embroidery, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the joyful Navruz festival each March.
Tajik food is hearty. Try qurutob, often called the national dish (flatbread soaked in a salty yoghurt sauce and topped with onions and herbs), and oshi palav (plov), a rice dish with meat and carrots that is also on UNESCO's heritage list. Add sambusa, shashlik, fresh non bread, apricots and endless green tea. A friendly "Salom" (hello) and "Rahmat" (thank you) open every door.
