Monaco is on the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur) in western Europe, on the Mediterranean Sea. It is surrounded on land by the French department of Alpes-Maritimes, between Nice (about 20 km west) and Menton and the Italian border (about 15 km east). The country climbs steeply from the sea, so lifts and escalators link its districts: Monaco-Ville, Monte-Carlo, La Condamine and Fontvieille.
Most visitors fly to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, with direct flights from New York and across Europe (about 2 hours from London). 📅 Best Time to Visit Monaco
The best time to visit Monaco is May–June and September, with warm weather, swimmable seas and fewer crowds than July and August. Big events push hotel prices sky-high: the Monaco Grand Prix (usually late May or early June), the Monaco Yacht Show (September) and the Monte-Carlo Rally (January). Winters are mild, around 10–14 °C, and quiet, with good hotel deals.

🛂 Monaco Visa & Entry Requirements
Entry through France: Monaco is not formally part of the Schengen Area, but it has an open border with France and applies the same rules. In practice, you arrive through France and follow Schengen entry rules. Citizens of the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and many others can visit visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. If you need a Schengen visa, apply for a French one.
🛂 EES is now in force: since 10 April 2026, non-EU visitors register fingerprints and a photo on their first entry to the Schengen Area, for example at Nice airport. ETIAS is expected from late 2026 but may slip to 2027, and it is not required yet.

Monaco itself takes one or two days. With a week, use Monaco as a glamorous base (or stay more cheaply in Nice or Menton) and explore the French Riviera by train and bus.

Monaco is one of the safest places in the world, with a large police presence and CCTV across the city. Normal care still applies: watch your bags on crowded trains and buses along the Riviera, where pickpockets are more common than in Monaco itself. Dress smartly for the casino and upmarket restaurants, and note that swimwear and bare chests are not allowed in the streets away from the beach.

Monaco has been ruled by the Grimaldi family since 1297, when François Grimaldi famously seized the fortress disguised as a monk. Prince Rainier III's 1956 marriage to Hollywood star Grace Kelly brought world fame, and today Prince Albert II leads the country. Monaco celebrates Sainte-Dévote, its patron saint, every 27 January with a boat burning, and its National Day on 19 November. The Opéra de Monte-Carlo and the Monte-Carlo Ballet keep the arts at the centre of local life.
