📍 Where Is Trinidad and Tobago?
Trinidad and Tobago are the southernmost islands of the Caribbean. Trinidad lies only about 11 km from the Venezuelan coast across the Gulf of Paria, and was once part of the South American mainland, so its wildlife is South American. Tobago is about 30 km north-east of Trinidad. Trinidad has the forested Northern Range, the Caroni Swamp, the Pitch Lake (the world's largest natural asphalt lake) and an oil and gas industry; Tobago has reefs, beaches and the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere (1776).

The best time to visit Trinidad and Tobago is the dry season from January to May (about 26–32°C). Carnival takes place on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday: in 2027 it falls on 8–9 February, so book months ahead. The rainy season (June–December) brings short heavy showers, but the islands are south of the main hurricane belt and are rarely hit. Leatherback turtles nest on Trinidad's beaches from March to August.

Trinidad and Tobago is the home of steelpan, the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century, as well as calypso, soca and limbo. Its people have African, Indian, European, Chinese, Syrian-Lebanese and Indigenous roots, so Carnival, Diwali, Eid, Phagwah and Emancipation Day are all big celebrations. Tobago's own festivals include goat and crab races at Buccoo at Easter.
Food is some of the best in the Caribbean. Try doubles (curried chickpeas in fried bara bread), bake and shark at Maracas Bay, roti, pelau, callaloo, curry crab and dumpling on Tobago, and Angostura bitters, made in Trinidad since 1875.
