🎭 Nicaraguan Culture & Food

Nicaragua is known as the land of poets: Rubén Darío, born near León, founded the modernist movement in Spanish poetry. Its culture mixes Indigenous, Spanish and Afro-Caribbean roots, with the satirical street theatre El Güegüense (on UNESCO's intangible heritage list), the marimba music of Masaya, and the Palo de Mayo festival of the Caribbean coast. Baseball, not football, is the most popular sport.

The national dish is gallo pinto (rice and red beans). Try vigorón (pork crackling, cassava and cabbage salad) in Granada, nacatamales wrapped in banana leaves, quesillo from the road to León, and rondón coconut stew on the Caribbean. Flor de Caña rum and Nicaraguan cigars from Estelí are famous.
