Timor-Leste is in Southeast Asia, at the eastern end of the Lesser Sunda Islands. It shares the island of Timor with Indonesia's West Timor and also includes Atauro Island, tiny Jaco Island and the exclave of Oecusse. Australia's Darwin lies about 700 km to the south across the Timor Sea. A rugged mountain spine runs along the island, rising to Mount Ramelau (about 2,986 m).

Timor-Leste has a tropical climate with a dry season from May to November and a wet season from December to April. The dry season is the best time to visit: roads are passable, seas are calm and diving visibility is excellent, especially from September to November. From roughly October to December, blue whales, pygmy blue whales and other cetaceans migrate through the deep Wetar Strait close to Dili. The mountains are cool all year and cold at night. Heavy rain in the wet season can close rural roads.

🌺 Timorese Culture & Food
Timor-Leste was a Portuguese colony for over 400 years, then occupied by Indonesia from 1975 to 1999. After a UN-backed vote and transition, it became independent on 20 May 2002. About 97% of people are Catholic, and churches and festivals are central to life. Traditional culture survives in uma lulik (sacred houses), tais weaving, which UNESCO lists as intangible heritage in need of urgent safeguarding, and village ceremonies.
Timorese food is simple and fresh. Try ikan sabuko (grilled fish with lime and chilli), batar da'an (corn, beans and pumpkin), caril (Portuguese-style curry), fresh seafood in Dili and tropical fruit. Highland Timorese coffee is excellent, and Portuguese pastries are sold in Dili bakeries.
