The Carpathian Mountains curve through the middle of the country, wrapping around the historic region of Transylvania.
Bucharest has direct flights from most European cities, and Cluj-Napoca, Iași and Timișoara have their own airports. Trains link Bucharest with Brașov in about 2.5–3 hours. Check the distance from your city with our distance calculator, or explore more in our Europe travel guides.

Romania has a continental climate with four seasons. Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the best months: mild days, green or golden forests and fewer crowds. Transfăgărășan road open, Black Sea beaches and festivals such as UNTOLD in Cluj.

💡 Safety & Travel Tips for Your Travel guide to Romania
Romania is generally safe for visitors. Watch for pickpockets in busy parts of Bucharest and on night trains, use ride-hailing apps or official taxis, and avoid unofficial money changers. In the Carpathians, Romania has Europe's largest brown bear population: never feed bears, stay on marked trails, keep food sealed and follow ranger advice. Rural roads can be slow, with horse carts and sharp bends, so drive carefully and avoid long drives after dark.
Fortified churches and mountain roads are hard to reach by train.
Never stop to feed bears on the Transfăgărășan.
Sarmale, mici, ciorbă and papanași for dessert.
"Bună ziua" (hello) and "Mulțumesc" (thank you).
Buy timed tickets online in summer and at Halloween.
Small guesthouses and markets often prefer lei.

🌺 Romanian Culture & Food
Romania blends Latin roots, Orthodox traditions and centuries of Saxon, Hungarian and Ottoman influence. Romanian is the only major Romance language in Eastern Europe. Rural regions such as Maramureș and Bucovina still keep folk costumes, wooden architecture and craft traditions, and the legend of Dracula is a modern blend of Bram Stoker's novel and the real 15th-century prince Vlad the Impaler.
Romanian food is hearty. Try sarmale (cabbage rolls), mămăligă (polenta) with cheese and sour cream, grilled mici, sour ciorbă soups and papanași doughnuts with jam. Romania is also one of Europe's larger wine producers; look for Fetească Neagră reds. Hosts often welcome guests with țuică plum brandy.
