๐ŸŒบ Marshallese Culture & Food

Marshallese culture is shaped by the ocean. Islanders were master navigators who used stick charts made of palm ribs and shells to map ocean swells between the atolls. Society is matrilineal, with land passed down through the mother's line. Big family celebrations such as a baby's first birthday (kemem) bring whole communities together. The country's recent history includes 67 US nuclear tests at Bikini and Enewetak (1946โ€“1958); Bikini Atoll became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

Traditional food is based on fish, coconut, breadfruit, pandanus and taro. Try fresh tuna sashimi, coconut crab, baked breadfruit, jekaro (sweet coconut sap) and pandanus juice.
