Fiji lies in the South Pacific Ocean, about 2,000 km north of New Zealand and 3,100 km east of Australia, with Vanuatu to the west and Tonga and Samoa to the east. Most visitors arrive on Viti Levu, the largest island, then take boats to the Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains off its west coast. Vanua Levu and Taveuni lie to the north-east.

Fijian life centres on the village (koro), the chief and the extended family. Visitors are welcomed with a sevusevu ceremony, where kava (yaqona) is shared from a coconut-shell cup, and meke dances tell old stories.
