Almost every visitor arrives at Velana International Airport (MLE), on its own island next to the capital, Malé. Direct and one-stop flights connect via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Colombo and Singapore; the flight from Dubai or Doha takes about 4 hours, and from Colombo about 1.5 hours. The Maldives is warm all year, around 28–31 °C. The dry north-east monsoon (December–April) is the best time to visit the Maldives, with sunshine, calm seas and the clearest water, but resort prices peak, especially over Christmas and New Year. The wet south-west monsoon (May–November) brings showers, wind and lower prices, and it is the best season for manta rays in Baa Atoll and for surfing. Rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts rather than all-day downpours.
Best for beach holidays, snorkelling and diving visibility. Book resorts 4–8 months ahead.
Lower rates and fewer people; expect some rain and rougher seas on transfer days.

How transfers work: resorts near Malé are reached by speedboat (often 15–60 minutes). More distant atolls need a seaplane, which flies only in daylight, or a domestic flight plus a boat. Your resort arranges the transfer, and it is often a large part of the cost, so check before booking.

This plan mixes a few affordable days on a local island with a resort finish, which is how many travellers stretch their budget. Domestic flights to Maamigili (South Ari) take about 25 minutes.
- Malé: arrive at MLE, walk the capital's fish market and Old Friday Mosque, and stay in Hulhumalé.
- To South Ari Atoll: domestic flight to Maamigili or a public speedboat to Dhigurah, then relax on the sandbank.
- South Ari: a whale shark snorkelling trip with a licensed operator, plus a sandbank picnic.
- South Ari: manta or turtle snorkelling, or a dive day if you are certified.
- To your resort: transfer to a resort in Ari or South Malé Atoll and check into a beach or overwater villa.

💡 Safety & Travel Tips for Visiting Maldives
The Maldives is very safe for visitors, and resort islands have almost no crime. The real risks are the sea and the sun: strong currents in reef channels, sunburn and coral cuts. Malé is generally safe but crowded; occasional political protests are best avoided. Check your government's latest travel advice before you go.
Resorts have bars, overwater villas and relaxed dress codes. Local islands are cheaper and friendlier but follow Islamic customs: no alcohol and modest dress.

Maldivian culture grew from centuries of sea trade with South India, Sri Lanka, Arabia and East Africa. Islam has been the state religion since 1153, and the coral-stone mosques of the islands, including Malé's Old Friday Mosque, are on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list. The drumming and dancing of Bodu Beru ("big drum") is the best-known traditional performance, often shown at resorts.
Maldivian food is built on tuna, coconut and chilli. Breakfast is mas huni: smoked tuna mixed with grated coconut, onion and chilli, eaten with roshi flatbread.
