Thailand sits in the heart of mainland Southeast Asia. It borders Myanmar to the west, Laos to the north-east, Cambodia to the east and Malaysia to the south. The cool, dry season (November–February) is the best time to visit most of Thailand, with sunshine, lower humidity and festivals such as Loy Krathong and Chiang Mai's Yi Peng lanterns in November. March–May is very hot, but Songkran (Thai New Year, 13–15 April) turns the country into a giant water fight. The rainy season (June–October) brings short, heavy showers, green landscapes and lower prices. The Gulf islands (Koh Samui) have a different pattern: their wettest months are October–December.

30 days visa-free for most Western visitors: since 15 September 2026, citizens of about 60 countries and territories, including the UK, USA, all EU countries, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, can visit Thailand visa-free for 30 days. You can apply once at an immigration office to extend by up to 30 more days. Travellers who entered before 15 September keep the stay stamped in their passport. Longer trips need a tourist visa or the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), applied for online.
