The Irrawaddy River runs through the heart of the country, past Mandalay and Bagan to the delta near Yangon.
Yangon is about 1.5 hours by air from Bangkok and Singapore. Land borders are not advised for foreign visitors. Check distances with our distance calculator.

The monsoon (JuneโOctober) brings heavy rain to Yangon and the coast, while Bagan stays drier.

๐ก Safety & Travel Tips for Your Travel guide to Myanmar
In 2026 large parts of Myanmar are active conflict zones, including Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Rakhine and Sagaing, and much of Shan and Mandalay regions. Airstrikes, landmines, roadblocks and arbitrary detention are real risks, and the internet and some apps may be blocked. If you are already in Myanmar, register with your embassy, stay in Yangon or other places your government says are lower risk, carry your passport, and avoid protests and military sites.
Go barefoot at all pagodas and monasteries.
Shoulders and knees at temples.
Damaged notes are refused.
Apps may be blocked; VPNs carry legal risk.
Never photograph soldiers or checkpoints.
"Mingalaba" means hello.
๐จ Where to Stay in Myanmar
While the US rates Myanmar Level 4: Do Not Travel, we are not recommending individual hotels. In normal times, visitors stay in colonial heritage hotels and international chains in Yangon, temple-view hotels in Bagan, lakeside resorts at Inle Lake, or on Irrawaddy river cruises between Mandalay and Bagan.
๐ Why there are no hotel picks in this travel guide to Myanmar: we do not recommend individual hotels while major governments advise against all travel. We will add them if the advice changes.

๐ Burmese Culture & Food
Most people in Myanmar are Theravada Buddhists, and daily life revolves around pagodas, monasteries and giving to monks. Many boys spend time as novice monks, and festivals follow the lunar calendar. You will see thanaka, a yellow paste of ground bark worn on the face as sunscreen, and the longyi, a wrap-around skirt worn by men and women.
Burmese food mixes influences from India, China and Thailand. Breakfast is mohinga, a fish and rice-noodle soup. Try lahpet thoke (fermented tea-leaf salad), Shan noodles, mild curries served with many side dishes, and sweet milky tea in a teahouse.
