📍 Where Is Colombia?

Colombia is in the northwest corner of South America. It borders Panama to the northwest, Venezuela and Brazil to the east, and Peru and Ecuador to the south. It is the only South American country with coasts on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Three ranges of the Andes run through the middle, with the Amazon rainforest in the southeast and the Llanos grasslands in the east. It is the second most biodiverse country on Earth.

Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena have direct flights from the USA, Europe and the rest of Latin America. Domestic flights are cheap and save long road journeys over the mountains. Check the distance from your city with our distance calculator, or explore more in our South America travel guides.

📅 Best Time to Visit Colombia

Colombia is close to the equator, so temperature depends on altitude, not season: the Caribbean coast is hot all year (28–32°C), Medellín is spring-like and Bogotá is cool (14–19°C). The main dry seasons are December to March and July to August, the best times for hiking, the Coffee Axis and Tayrona. July to October is humpback whale season on the Pacific coast. Big events include Barranquilla Carnival (February or March) and Medellín's Flower Festival (August).

☀️ Dry season (Dec–Mar)

Best for beaches, Tayrona, the Lost City trek and cities.

🌺 Mid-year dry spell (Jul–Aug)

Medellín's Flower Festival and good weather in the Andes.

🐋 Whale season (Jul–Oct)

Humpback whales off Nuquí and Bahía Solano on the Pacific.

🎭 Carnival (Feb/Mar)

Barranquilla Carnival, recognised by UNESCO.

📅 Use the seasons in this travel guide to Colombia to match your trip to the weather, festivals and prices you want.

🌺 Colombian Culture & Food

Colombian culture mixes Indigenous, Spanish and African roots. Music is everywhere: cumbia and vallenato on the Caribbean coast, salsa in Cali, and reggaeton stars from Medellín. Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez made Colombia the home of magical realism, and artist Fernando Botero filled its squares with his rounded sculptures. Colombia is also famous for its smooth Arabica coffee and for growing more types of birds than any other country.

Food varies by region. Try a bandeja paisa (beans, rice, meat, chicharrón, egg, plantain and avocado) in Medellín, ajiaco (chicken and potato soup) in Bogotá, fried fish with coconut rice and patacones on the coast, and arepas everywhere. Taste exotic fruits such as lulo, maracuyá and guanábana, and drink a tinto or a fresh fruit juice.
