Ecuador sits on the equator on the Pacific coast of South America, between Colombia to the north and Peru to the south and east. Four regions sit side by side: the hot Pacific coast, the high Andes with the "Avenue of the Volcanoes", the Amazon rainforest (El Oriente) in the east, and the volcanic Galápagos Islands about 1,000 km offshore. Ecuador has different seasons in each region. In the Andes, June to September is the driest and sunniest time for Quito, Cotopaxi and Cuenca. The coast is hottest and rainiest from January to April.
