🎶 Venezuelan Culture & Food

Venezuela is the homeland of Simón Bolívar, who led much of South America to independence, and its culture mixes Indigenous, Spanish and African roots. Music ranges from joropo, played with harp, cuatro and maracas on the Llanos, to salsa and gaita from Zulia at Christmas. El Sistema, the free youth orchestra programme, is famous worldwide, and baseball is the national passion.

Food is comforting and filling: try arepas stuffed with cheese or shredded beef, pabellón criollo (beef, black beans, rice and fried plantain), cachapas (sweet corn pancakes), tequeños (cheese sticks), and at Christmas hallacas. Venezuelan cacao and rum are among the best in the world.
