πŸ“ Where Is Morocco?

Morocco sits in the far north-west of Africa, with coastlines on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. At the Strait of Gibraltar it lies only about 14 km from Spain, and fast ferries link Tarifa and Algeciras with Tangier in about an hour. It borders Algeria to the east.

The Atlas Mountains run diagonally across the country, rising to 4,167 m at Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. North of the mountains lie the imperial cities of Fes, Meknes, Rabat and Marrakech; south and east of them, the land drops into the pre-Sahara and the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Flights take about 3.5 hours from London, under 2 hours from Madrid and about 7 hours from New York to Casablanca. Check the distance from your city with our distance calculator, or explore the region in our Africa guides.

πŸ“… Best Time to Visit Morocco

The best time to visit Morocco is spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when cities are warm but comfortable and the desert is pleasant by day. Summer is very hot inland, with Marrakech and Fes often above 40 Β°C, but the Atlantic coast stays breezy and mild. Winter brings sunny days, cold nights in the desert and snow in the High Atlas. During Ramadan, which moves about 11 days earlier each year, many cafΓ©s close in daylight hours and opening times change, though travel is still very rewarding.

🌸 Spring (Mar–May)

Ideal for Marrakech, Fes and Atlas hikes. The Rose Festival in Kelaat M'Gouna is held in May.

β˜€οΈ Summer (Jun–Aug)

Head for the coast: Essaouira, Agadir and Taghazout. The Gnaoua World Music Festival fills Essaouira in June.

πŸ‚ Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Pleasant everywhere, with fewer crowds. Great for Sahara trips and road trips over the Atlas.

❄️ Winter (Dec–Feb)

Clear skies and cool days in the cities; freezing desert nights and snow in the mountains. Pack layers.

  2. Marrakech: Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, Jardin Majorelle and an afternoon in the souks.
  3. Over the Atlas to AΓ―t Benhaddou (about 4 hours): cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass and explore the ksar at golden hour.
  4. To Merzouga (about 6 hours): via the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, then a camel ride to a desert camp.
  5. Merzouga to Fes (about 8 hours): a long scenic drive through the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas.
  6. Fes: a guided walk through Fes el-Bali, the tanneries, madrasas and craft workshops.

πŸ’‘ Safety & Travel Tips for Visiting Morocco

Morocco is generally safe for travellers. The main issues are pushy touts, fake guides in the medinas and petty theft in crowds. Women travelling alone may get unwanted attention; confident, modest dress and a firm "la, shukran" (no, thank you) help. Check your government's latest travel advice before you go.

🧭 Use official guides

In Fes and Marrakech, hire licensed guides through your riad, and ignore people who offer to "show you the way".

πŸ›οΈ Bargain with a smile

Haggling is expected in the souks. Start around half the asking price and walk away politely if it does not work.

πŸ‘— Dress modestly

Cover shoulders and knees in towns and villages, and carry a scarf for visiting religious sites.

πŸ’§ Drink bottled water

Stick to bottled or filtered water, and choose busy food stalls where food is cooked fresh.

πŸš• Taxis

In cities, insist on the meter in petit taxis, or agree the fare before you get in.

πŸ“Έ Ask first

Always ask before photographing people, and expect to tip performers in Jemaa el-Fnaa.

🌺 Moroccan Culture & Food

Moroccan culture blends Amazigh (Berber), Arab, Andalusian, Jewish and French influences. You will hear it in Gnawa music, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, see it in zellige tilework and carved cedar ceilings, and feel it in the hospitality of a glass of sweet mint tea, offered almost everywhere you go.

Moroccan food is slow-cooked and fragrant. Try a tagine of lamb with prunes or chicken with preserved lemon, Friday couscous, sweet-and-savoury pastilla and harira soup, which is how many families break the fast during Ramadan. A visit to a local hammam is a memorable way to end a day. A simple "Salam alaikum" (peace be upon you) and "Shukran" (thank you) go a long way.
