How to Get the Best Exchange Rate When You Travel
Know the mid-market rate
The rate shown here is the reference rate between banks. Your bank or exchange office adds a margin on top, so compare against it.
Always pay in local currency
If a card machine or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That option, called dynamic currency conversion, usually costs more.
Watch ATM fees
Withdraw larger amounts less often to limit fixed fees, and use the ATM fee calculator above to see the real cost.
Avoid airport exchanges
Airport and hotel exchange desks often have the widest margins. Exchange a small amount only, if you must.
Check card foreign fees
Many cards charge around 3% on foreign purchases. Travel-friendly cards with no foreign transaction fee can save a lot.
Budget in local prices
A trip’s real cost depends on local prices, not just the exchange rate. Use the budget and PPP estimators for a fuller picture.
Currency Converter: Frequently Asked Questions
How often are the exchange rates updated?
Rates are refreshed once a day from an international reference-rate provider. The date of the latest update is shown under the converter. If the live feed is unavailable, the converter uses stored indicative rates and tells you so.
Why is my bank’s rate different from this converter?
This converter shows mid-market reference rates. Banks, card providers and exchange offices add their own margin and fees, so the rate you actually receive is usually a little worse.
What is an ISO 4217 currency code?
It is the three-letter code used worldwide for each currency, such as USD for the US dollar, EUR for the euro and NGN for the Nigerian naira.
Should I exchange money before I travel?
It helps to carry a small amount of local cash for arrival. For the rest, withdrawing from a local ATM or paying by card in local currency is often cheaper than exchanging cash at home.
Can I use these rates for business or tax purposes?
No. They are for general information and travel planning only. For official transactions, use your bank’s rate or your tax authority’s published rates.
