Saint Kitts and Nevis lies in the Leeward Islands of the eastern Caribbean, about 350 km east of Puerto Rico, between Sint Eustatius to the north-west and Montserrat and Antigua to the south-east. The two volcanic islands are separated by a 3 km strait called The Narrows. Saint Kitts was the first English colony in the Caribbean (1623), and sugar shaped its history until the industry closed in 2005. Today, the culture mixes African and British roots: masquerade dancers, bull plays and clown troupes appear at Sugar Mas, the national Carnival, and string bands play at Christmas. Nevis was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the United States.
